Ted Turner, the pioneering media entrepreneur who transformed global television journalism by launching the world’s first 24-hour news network, has died at the age of 87.

Turner, founder of CNN in 1980, revolutionised how audiences consume news by introducing continuous, real-time coverage of global events. His innovation reshaped modern broadcasting and positioned the network as one of the most influential media institutions worldwide.

His passing was confirmed in a statement issued by Turner Enterprises, which described him as a visionary whose impact on journalism remains unmatched.

“Turner’s vision changed journalism forever by making news immediate, global, and constant,” the statement noted.

A bold and often unconventional figure, Turner built a vast media empire that extended beyond news into entertainment and sports. His ventures included the creation of Cartoon Network and Turner Classic Movies, as well as ownership of the Atlanta Braves, which he helped elevate to national prominence.

Industry insiders describe him as a once-in-a-generation media innovator whose influence reached every facet of modern broadcasting.

Beyond his business achievements, Turner was widely recognised for his philanthropic and environmental efforts. He established the United Nations Foundation after pledging $1 billion to support global development initiatives, becoming one of the most prominent private contributors to international causes.

His environmental advocacy also extended to public awareness campaigns and creative projects, including the animated series Captain Planet and the Planeteers, which promoted ecological responsibility to younger audiences.

In recognition of his far-reaching impact, Time named him Man of the Year in 1991, highlighting his role in shaping global media and public consciousness.

Turner gradually stepped away from active business leadership following the sale of much of his media holdings to Time Warner, though he remained closely associated with CNN, often describing it as his proudest achievement.

In later years, he faced health challenges after being diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, a condition that affects memory, movement, and cognitive function.
