Nigeria Strengthens UK Ties with Strategic Investment Agreements

Nigeria’s engagement with the United Kingdom has yielded significant economic outcomes, as the administration of Bola Tinubu advances efforts to secure investment, strengthen trade, and deepen bilateral cooperation.

According to Wale Edun, the visit underscored a shift in Nigeria’s global positioning, from a nation of potential to one delivering measurable progress.

A key outcome of the engagement was a £746 million export finance agreement with the UK to fund the redevelopment of critical port infrastructure, including the Lagos Port Complex and Tin Can Island Port.

The financing structure is designed to be repaid through increased revenues generated by upgraded port operations. The improvements are expected to reduce cargo clearance timelines significantly, lowering logistics costs and enhancing trade efficiency.

The visit also attracted new investment commitments, including a £24 million manufacturing investment by Associated British Foods, aimed at boosting local production and job creation.

In the financial sector, the expansion of UK-based payment platform Wise into Nigeria’s remittance ecosystem is expected to reduce transfer costs and improve inflows to Nigerian households.

Additional agreements focused on easing business mobility through streamlined visa processes, as well as strengthening cooperation in security, counter-terrorism, and intelligence sharing.

The engagement also highlighted Nigeria’s creative industry, with increased international exposure expected to unlock opportunities for partnerships and investment.

The agreements reflect a broader strategy to align Nigeria’s economic strengths with global opportunities, with a focus on delivering tangible outcomes in infrastructure, trade, and job creation.
