NAFDAC Clears BON Bread Over Shelf-Life Claims
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has cleared BON Bread manufacturer, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, of any regulatory violation following investigations into allegations surrounding the product’s extended shelf life.
The agency disclosed this in a statement issued on Sunday, explaining that the decision followed laboratory tests and facility inspections conducted after viral social media claims raised concerns about the bread’s preservation process.
NAFDAC stated that the investigation involved scientific analysis of bread samples collected from production facilities and open markets, as well as inspections of the company’s manufacturing operations.

According to the agency, the outcome confirmed that the manufacturer complied fully with approved food safety standards and regulations guiding bread production in Nigeria.
“The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has concluded investigations into public concerns regarding the extended shelf life of BON Bread and confirmed that the manufacturer, Food & Food Integrated Company Limited, is in compliance with regulatory standards,” the statement read.
NAFDAC disclosed that calcium propionate, an approved preservative commonly used in bread production, was found within acceptable limits in line with Codex Alimentarius international standards.
The agency further stated that no harmful or prohibited substances, including bromate and non-nutritive sweeteners, were detected in any of the samples tested.
According to the regulator, the findings addressed concerns generated by the viral claims and confirmed that the bread met established safety requirements.
The investigation followed a viral social media post circulated on April 13, 2026, alleging that a loaf of bread remained mould-free for over two months, sparking public debate over the possible use of chemical preservatives.
Although the bread brand was not initially mentioned, the manufacturer later identified the product as BON Bread and described the allegations as misleading.
NAFDAC also noted that Food & Food Integrated Company Limited had maintained regulatory compliance since beginning operations in 2006, including successful licence renewals without sanctions or product recalls.
The agency warned against drawing conclusions from unverified social media reports, stressing that food safety concerns should be subjected to scientific investigation and regulatory review.
It encouraged consumers to report concerns through official regulatory channels for proper investigation and verification.
