KPMG Marks End of Sehoole’s Tenure as CEO

KPMG South Africa and KPMG One Africa have formally honoured the outgoing Chief Executive Officer, Ignatius Sehoole, as he prepares to conclude his tenure, describing his leadership as defined by integrity, resilience, and institutional rebuilding.

In a statement, the firm said a farewell event was held in Johannesburg, drawing senior figures from government, business, academia, regulators, clients, competitors, the media, and KPMG’s African leadership network.

The event, themed “From Leadership to Legacy,” highlighted both Sehoole’s personal leadership journey and the broader organisational reforms undertaken during his time in office. It also marked the official transition of leadership to incoming CEO Joelene Pierce, a move the firm said signals continuity and confidence in its strategic direction.

Sehoole assumed the role in 2019 during a challenging period for the firm, with a mandate to rebuild public trust, strengthen governance structures, and restore credibility.

During his tenure, he oversaw wide-ranging reforms focused on audit quality, governance improvements, stakeholder engagement, and reinforcing a culture of accountability and transparency. As chair of KPMG One Africa, he also promoted deeper regional collaboration and strengthened Africa’s voice in global business forums, including the B20, where the firm served as a knowledge partner.

He is expected to formally step down in March after what the firm described as a stabilisation phase that positioned KPMG for sustained growth anchored on ethical leadership.

Professor Wiseman Nkuhlu, who was involved in Sehoole’s appointment, said his leadership came at a time when moral authority was essential, noting that he brought humility, discipline, and integrity to the role. According to him, Sehoole’s contribution extended beyond institutional recovery to reinforcing the ethical foundations of leadership.

Incoming CEO Pierce also acknowledged Sehoole’s impact, stating that he leaves behind a stronger and more stable organisation grounded in its core values. She said she intends to build on that foundation while advancing a culture of trust, excellence, and integrity.

Beyond corporate achievements, those close to Sehoole described him as someone who finds balance in agriculture and nature, a grounding influence that shaped his leadership philosophy.

With his departure, the firm said he leaves not only a transformed institution but also a legacy centred on ethical responsibility and long-term stewardship.
