Teachers Celebrated in Wema@80 Awards

Wema Bank has recognised educators across the country for their contributions to learning and youth development through its “Wema at 80 Teachers’ Day Campaign.” The initiative, which climaxed with an award ceremony at the bank’s headquarters in Marina, Lagos, celebrated teachers whose work has influenced and inspired young people over the years.

The event, themed “Celebrating Teachers with a Legacy of Impact,” formed part of activities marking the bank’s 80th anniversary. More than ₦4.5 million was presented to the top winners selected from thousands of nominations received nationwide.

The Managing Director of Wema Bank, Moruf Oseni, said the campaign was designed to spotlight the role of teachers in shaping society, noting that their contribution often goes unnoticed despite being central to national development.

“Teachers are the foundation of every success story,” he said. “As we celebrate 80 years of community impact, it is important for us to acknowledge the educators who continue to guide and influence future leaders. This initiative reflects our commitment to supporting the education sector and empowering those who play a key role within it.”

The top prize of ₦2 million was awarded to Abraham Ngobiri, founder of Teens-Train, an organisation focused on mentoring and counselling adolescents. Esther Babasola Adesada, who leads the Heritage X Foundation, received ₦1.5 million, while Taiwo Alabi, founder of Educycle, was presented with ₦1 million.

The honourees described the recognition as both rewarding and motivating. Ngobiri said the gesture affirmed the value of teachers who commit their lives to shaping others, while Adesada noted that the award came at a time she wrestled with self-doubt. Alabi added that the acknowledgment reflected the daily dedication of teachers across the country.

The Wema at 80 Teachers’ Day Campaign, introduced in September 2025, encouraged students and alumni to submit 80-second videos appreciating educators who made a significant impact on their lives. Ten teachers were shortlisted before three winners emerged through a final review process.

Beyond the awards, Wema Bank said the campaign forms part of a broader investment in education. The programme has so far delivered over ₦20 million in prizes and mentorship support, benefitting more than 3,000 students and 10 schools nationwide
