Tokyo Robbery Sees $2.7m Cash Stolen in Rare Street Heist

Published

on

Police in Tokyo are investigating a robbery in which three men stole suitcases containing $2.7 million near Ueno station, a rare large-scale crime in the Japanese capital.

The thieves used pepper spray to snatch the cash from a group of five Chinese and Japanese nationals attempting to load the money into a vehicle. Authorities said it was unclear why such a large sum was being transported, though reports suggest it was destined for currency exchange outlets.

Separately, another individual carrying 190 million yen was attacked with pepper spray at Haneda Airport hours later. Police are probing possible links between the two incidents.
