The Corporate Affairs Commission has issued a strong warning to Point-of-Sale operators nationwide, stating that it will begin strict enforcement against all unregistered PoS businesses starting 1 January 2026.

In an update released on its Instagram page, the Commission noted a surge in unregistered PoS agents across the country, describing the trend as a violation of the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020 and the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Agent Banking Regulations.

The CAC also criticised some fintech firms for onboarding agents without proper business registration, calling the practice reckless and harmful to the country’s financial system. According to the Commission, such lapses expose millions of Nigerians—especially small businesses and rural customers—to fraud and other financial risks.

The Commission warned that from January 2026, enforcement agencies will seize or deactivate PoS terminals belonging to operators who fail to comply with registration requirements. It added that fintech companies enabling unregistered operations would be placed under watch and reported to the CBN.

This development comes as lawmakers continue to raise concerns over rising fraud in PoS operations. The Chairman of the House of Representatives ad hoc committee probing cryptocurrency and PoS-related risks, Olufemi Bamisile, recently disclosed that his committee had received multiple reports of cloned terminals, anonymous transactions, poor KYC compliance, and unregulated agents—all contributing to heightened financial and security risks nationwide.
