Nigeria has been elected into Category C of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Council.

The election took place during the IMO General Assembly in London, United Kingdom, on Friday.

IMO’s Category A comprises 10 states with the largest interest in providing international shipping services, while Category B consists of 10 states with the largest interest in international seaborne trade. Category C includes 20 states with special interests in maritime transport or navigation, whose election ensures representation of all major geographic areas of the world.

In a statement on Friday, the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) said the country’s return to the council seat is a testament to Nigeria’s growing influence in the global maritime community.

The Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) also confirmed the development, noting that the achievement underscores the visionary leadership, commitment to global best practices, and tireless efforts of Gboyega Oyetola, Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, alongside the dedicated heads of agencies under the ministry.

“Joining the IMO Council in Category C places Nigeria among the world’s leading maritime nations, amplifying our voice in shaping global maritime policies, safety standards, security, and environmental sustainability,” NPA stated.

“It is a well-deserved recognition of Nigeria’s strategic importance as the maritime hub of West and Central Africa and the giant strides made in port efficiency, trade facilitation, and blue economy development.”

Abubakar Dantsoho, Managing Director of the NPA, congratulated Oyetola for his commitment, which has positioned Nigeria firmly back on the global maritime map.

Oyetola had earlier announced Nigeria’s bid for the IMO Council (Category C) elections. In July, the minister launched a comprehensive campaign to secure Nigeria’s election into the council.
