Nigeria Establishes 12 Water Quality Laboratories Nationwide

The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched 12 reference laboratories across the country to improve nationwide water quality monitoring. The announcement was made at the inaugural Annual Water Quality Conference in Abuja by Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, as reported by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Representing Utsev, Permanent Secretary Richard Pheelangwah explained that the facilities are part of the National Water Quality Reference Laboratories and Monitoring Network Programme. The initiative aims to ensure safer drinking water for Nigerians, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the 2021 WASHNORM report, while 67% of Nigerians have basic water access, 25% still rely on unsafe sources. Utsev highlighted the use of innovative technologies, including hydrogen sulfide vials, to enhance water testing and safety standards.

Elizabeth Ugoh, Director of Water Quality Control and Sanitation, stressed the importance of clean water for public health. “Contaminated water leads to diseases like cholera and typhoid, hindering economic development. We must develop robust policies to improve nationwide water safety,” she urged.

UNICEF WASH Manager Chiranjibi Tiwari noted that two-thirds of Nigeria’s water sources remain contaminated, contributing to widespread waterborne illnesses. UNESCO’s Dr. Enang Momah emphasized the need for better wastewater treatment, warning of pollution risks intensified by climate change.
