Tinubu Approves N2bn For Resettlement of Flood Victims in Niger

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the release of N2 billion for the immediate reconstruction of homes affected by the recent flood disaster in Mokwa, Niger State.

The announcement was made by Vice President Kashim Shettima during his visit to the victims in Mokwa town. Shettima assured residents that the Federal Government would address all concerns raised by the affected communities. He emphasized that the President’s heart is with the grieving people of Mokwa and that relief efforts would be carried out in collaboration with the Niger State Government.

The government has approved the delivery of 20 trucks of food items for distribution to victims, in partnership with the Village Head of Mokwa. The Ministers for Environment and State for Agriculture have been directed to relocate to Niger to oversee immediate interventions under the ACRSAL project, focusing on drainage issues in Mokwa town. The Federal Ministry of Works has been instructed to repair flood-damaged bridges in Mokwa, ensuring restored access for residents and businesses. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has been mobilized to provide urgent assistance, including food, medical supplies, and temporary shelter.

The flood, which struck on May 28, 2025, has caused severe destruction, with over 200 bodies recovered and many more still missing. The Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs in Niger State, Ahmad Suleiman, stated that search-and-rescue operations are ongoing.
