The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has approved N2.6 billion for waste management projects in Abuja, alongside several contracts aimed at road construction and streetlight upgrades across the capital city.

These approvals were made during the 14th committee meeting held in Abuja and chaired by the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.

During a briefing on Tuesday, the Coordinator of the Abuja Metropolitan Management Council (AMMC), Chief Felix Obuah, stated that the committee sanctioned contracts focusing on improving waste management in Abuja. Among them was the approval for the operation and maintenance of the Apo Erector facility and an extension of service contracts for the operation and maintenance of the Wupa Basic Sewage Treatment Plant.

The committee also approved an extension of contracts for solid waste collection and management services covering 40 designated areas within the FCT for a period of two months.

In addition to waste management projects, acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Dauda, disclosed that the committee awarded contracts for road construction and erosion control.

These include the construction of access roads, drainages, and culverts totaling 1.7 kilometers in Durumi District, particularly around the Apostolic Church. The committee also approved infrastructure development in Mabushi District, including Kez Udezue Street, which will see underground drainage, street lighting, water, and sewage collectors.

Emergency contracts were approved to tackle erosion affecting the water pipeline running from Lower Usuma Dam through Kubwa to Airport Road and Gwagwalada. The erosion had damaged the major pipeline feeding water supply tanks in several districts, posing a threat to the distribution network. A Chinese company, CGC Nigeria Ltd., was engaged to execute the emergency repairs.

Other contracts approved include the renovation, furnishing, and technical installations at the Department of State Security Headquarters, as well as the construction of a magistrate court block in Jabi.

Among the FCDA’s approved projects is the upgrade of streetlights on the 14-kilometer stretch of the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway (Ring Road I), linking Maitama to Gudu. Dauda noted that the current lighting system on the expressway has been in place for nearly 15 years and has become outdated, leaving parts of the road in darkness. The planned upgrade will integrate a hybrid street lighting system designed to enhance visibility, road safety, and nighttime mobility.
