EFCC Clarifies Achimugu Probe, Rejects Political Allegations

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has stated that the ongoing case involving businesswoman Aisha Achimugu is not connected to any political figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu.

The clarification was issued by the anti-graft agency amid growing public speculation linking the investigation to political interests and high-profile individuals.

In a statement, the commission emphasised that its actions in the matter are strictly guided by law and evidence, dismissing claims that the case has any political undertone or external influence.

According to the EFCC, “the investigation and subsequent actions taken in respect of Aisha Achimugu are based solely on issues that fall within the mandate of the Commission and have no correlation whatsoever with any political actor or office holder.”

The agency further noted that attempts to associate the case with prominent political figures are unfounded and aimed at misrepresenting the facts of the investigation.

It stated, “the Commission wishes to make it categorically clear that there is no link between the case involving Aisha Achimugu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. Any insinuation to the contrary is misleading and should be disregarded.”

The EFCC reiterated its commitment to carrying out its statutory responsibilities without fear or favour, stressing that all cases handled by the agency are pursued based on available evidence and in accordance with due process.

“The Commission remains focused on its core mandate of tackling economic and financial crimes. Investigations are conducted professionally and independently, without regard to status, position, or political affiliation,” the statement added.

The agency also cautioned against the spread of misinformation, noting that inaccurate reports could undermine public confidence in ongoing investigations and the broader justice system.

It said, “members of the public are advised to rely on official communication from the Commission and refrain from spreading unverified information capable of distorting the facts of any case under investigation.”

The clarification comes amid heightened public attention on the activities of the EFCC, particularly in cases involving high-profile individuals and corporate entities.

Observers note that such cases often attract speculation, especially where prominent names are mentioned in public discourse.

However, the EFCC maintained that its processes remain transparent and rooted in legal provisions, adding that it will continue to provide updates as necessary through official channels.

The Commission reaffirmed that it will not be distracted by external narratives or attempts to politicise its investigations.

It stated, “the EFCC will continue to discharge its responsibilities in line with the law and will not be swayed by conjecture or unfounded claims linking its operations to political considerations.”

The agency concluded by reiterating its stance on impartiality, noting that all individuals and entities under investigation are treated equally under the law.

“The Commission assures Nigerians that it remains committed to upholding integrity, accountability, and the rule of law in all its operations,” it said.
