Nigeria Achieves Record 91.45% ICAO Aviation Safety Rating
President Bola Tinubu has lauded Nigeria’s attainment of a 91.45 percent aviation safety rating from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), describing the milestone as a pivotal boost for investor confidence and the nation’s international standing.
The rating was announced by the ICAO audit team during a debriefing at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) headquarters in Abuja.
The audit, conducted under the Universal Safety Oversight Audit Programme (USOAP), resulted in an Effective Implementation (EI) score that significantly outpaces both regional and global benchmarks. Nigeria’s 91.45 percent score stands in stark contrast to the West African regional average of 61.1 percent and the global average of 70.4 percent.
In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President emphasized that the score affirms Nigeria’s commitment to international standards.
“Nigeria is well-positioned above the regional and global ratings, which, in turn, significantly boost investor confidence and strengthen international aviation credibility,” the statement noted.

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has implemented a five-point agenda specifically designed to enhance the aviation value chain. Central to this strategy is strict compliance with safety regulations and the continuous improvement of Nigeria’s ICAO standing.
Despite the record achievement, President Tinubu has directed the Ministry of Aviation to rigorously review and implement all technical recommendations provided by the ICAO auditors. The objective is to ensure that Nigeria does not merely maintain its current status but continues to improve its safety oversight systems.
The ICAO, a United Nations agency, utilizes these audits to ensure member states effectively manage safety risks, directly influencing global confidence in national airspaces.
