Nigeria’s renewable energy sector is gaining traction as local solar manufacturing capacity expands significantly.

The Rural Electrification Agency disclosed that domestic solar panel production capacity has risen to 300 megawatts from 120 megawatts recorded two years ago, with a project pipeline of about 3.7 gigawatts underway.

This growth reflects a deliberate strategy to attract investment and position Nigeria as a renewable energy hub in West Africa.

Increased private sector participation and supportive policies have driven the expansion, leading to the establishment of several solar manufacturing facilities.

Locally produced solar panels are now being exported to other African countries, marking Nigeria’s emergence as a regional player in renewable energy supply.

Regulatory reforms have also supported growth, particularly in mini grid development and distributed energy systems. Updated regulations now allow for larger project capacities and simplified licensing processes.

These improvements are expected to boost investor confidence and accelerate deployment of renewable energy solutions, especially in underserved areas.

The expansion is critical for addressing Nigeria’s electricity challenges, as many households and businesses continue to face unreliable power supply.

There are also opportunities for cross border electricity trade, which could enhance regional integration and economic development.

While progress has been notable, sustained growth will depend on continued investment, policy consistency and infrastructure development.
