Edun Breaks Silence After Exit from Cabinet

Former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, has described his time in office as an honour and privilege, following his removal from the Federal Executive Council.

Edun spoke shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu carried out a minor cabinet reshuffle that led to his exit, alongside the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa. The President has since nominated Taiwo Oyedele as the new Minister of Finance.

Reflecting on his tenure, Edun said his administration worked to stabilise Nigeria’s macroeconomic environment and strengthen fiscal sustainability. He noted that the government inherited a fragile economy but focused on reforms aimed at restoring confidence and improving economic performance.

He stated that during his time in office, Nigeria’s economic growth improved from about two per cent to over four per cent, while inflation reportedly eased from 35 per cent to around 15 per cent. According to him, these gains were the result of coordinated reforms designed to enhance investor confidence and support inclusive growth.

Edun expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve, adding that the economic reforms undertaken were aimed at laying a foundation for long-term stability and development.

He maintained that while progress had been made, significant work still lies ahead to fully achieve sustainable economic growth and broader prosperity for Nigerians.

The former minister also reiterated that the administration’s focus remained on restoring public trust in the economy and ensuring policy continuity for long-term impact.

President Tinubu’s cabinet reshuffle, according to official sources, is part of efforts to strengthen governance delivery and improve coordination in key economic sectors under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
