CEO Campbell Wilson Exits Air India, Transition Period Underway
Campbell Wilson, CEO of Indian national carrier Air India, has resigned from his position, local media reported Tuesday. The reasons for his departure were not officially disclosed, and neither Air India nor its parent company, the Tata Group, has issued a statement.
Wilson, a New Zealand national who assumed leadership of the airline in 2022 following its privatisation, submitted his resignation before completing his five-year term, according to the Press Trust of India. Reports indicate he will remain in the role during a transitional period as a successor is appointed.

During his tenure, Wilson led efforts to modernise Air India’s fleet, improve service standards, and integrate operations, but his initiatives faced significant challenges. Supply chain disruptions, delays in aircraft deliveries, and rising operational costs hampered progress.
The airline also came under heightened regulatory scrutiny in recent months following operational disruptions and safety incidents. The most notable setback occurred in June 2025, when Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London, crashed shortly after departing Ahmedabad. The tragedy claimed 241 lives, leaving only one survivor and impacting 19 people on the ground.
Despite these challenges, industry analysts note that Wilson’s leadership contributed to strategic fleet planning and operational restructuring, laying groundwork for long-term improvements in the carrier’s competitiveness.
Air India now faces the task of identifying a new CEO who can navigate the airline through ongoing modernization efforts while restoring public confidence in safety and operational reliability.
