Nigeria, Finland Seal Deal on Digitalisation, Innovation

Nigeria has signed a strategic agreement with Finland aimed at strengthening cooperation in digitalisation and innovation, as both countries seek to deepen collaboration in the technology sector.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed in Abuja by Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, and Finland’s Under-Secretary of State for International Trade, Jarno Syrjälä.

According to a statement issued by the Finnish Embassy, the agreement provides a framework for cooperation in areas such as digital government, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, innovation ecosystems, and capacity building.

Both countries noted that the partnership is designed to leverage digital transformation as a driver of economic growth, improved public service delivery, and inclusive innovation.

Tijani described the agreement as a significant milestone in bilateral relations.

“Today’s MoU signing marks an important step in strengthening the partnership between both countries as we work to build a more inclusive, innovation-driven digital economy,” he said.

He added that the deal builds on earlier engagements held in Helsinki, where discussions focused on digital infrastructure development and collaborative opportunities.

“We are confident that this partnership will unlock meaningful opportunities as a catalyst for sustainable growth and shared prosperity,” he stated.

On his part, Syrjälä reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation journey.

“Digitalisation is at its best when it empowers people, strengthens trust, and creates new opportunities for innovation,” he said.

He noted that Nigeria remains a key partner for Finland in Africa and that the agreement lays a strong foundation for cooperation among governments, institutions, and private sector players.

The development comes amid broader international support for Nigeria’s digital economy agenda. Finland is expected to lead a €23 million Team Europe Initiative, funded by the European Union, to enhance Nigeria’s digital public services and support the rollout of the 3 Million Technical Talent programme.

The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with development agencies, focusing on expanding access to secure and citizen-centred digital services while strengthening institutional capacity and governance frameworks.
