Aviation Minister Orders Return of Hybrid Payment System at Airport Gates

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has directed the resumption of a hybrid payment system at airport access gates nationwide.

The directive was announced in a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson following the earlier suspension of the full cashless payment system by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Under the new arrangement, motorists will be able to pay for airport access using both cash and electronic channels.

The hybrid system will be implemented across all airports managed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria.

According to the ministry, the decision aims to address traffic congestion experienced during the rollout of the fully cashless payment system.

“Following the earlier suspension of the full cashless access gate payment system as directed by the President due to the traffic gridlock it created, the Minister met with officials of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria and senior officials of the ministry,” the statement said.

“In the meantime, a hybrid payment system that accommodates both cash and card payments will resume at all airport access gates.”

The ministry explained that the temporary arrangement would allow airport users to make payments through cash, point-of-sale terminals, and other approved electronic channels.

Motorists who already possess the FAAN Go Cashless Card were advised to continue using it.

More than 100,000 cards have been issued since the system was introduced.

The ministry added that discussions will continue with concessionaires to develop a fully automated payment system in the future.

Authorities also encouraged airport users to obtain and use the FAAN Go Cashless Card as part of efforts to gradually improve the digital payment system.

The hybrid model is expected to serve as an interim solution while government agencies refine the electronic payment framework to ensure smoother operations at airport access gates nationwide.
