FG to Review $6.2 Billion MTN-IHS Deal Over Sector Implications

The Federal Government will carry out a regulatory review of MTN Group’s proposed $6.2 billion acquisition of IHS Holding Limited, highlighting the critical role of telecom infrastructure in Nigeria’s economic and national security landscape.

The all-cash transaction would convert IHS into a wholly owned MTN subsidiary and result in its delisting from the market. MTN already holds a substantial minority stake in IHS, one of Africa’s largest independent tower operators.

Minister of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, noted:

“Telecommunications infrastructure is vital to national security, economic growth, financial services, innovation, and social inclusion. Therefore, the Ministry will conduct a comprehensive review in coordination with relevant regulators.”

He added:

“Our goal is to ensure that any market consolidation or structural change protects consumers, secures investments, and maintains the long-term health and sustainability of the sector.”
