NGX Opens Week With 601m Shares Traded, Market Cap Hits NGN 106 Trillion

The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NGX) opened the week with a flurry of activity, closing Monday’s session with 601.6 million shares traded across 58,419 deals, valued at NGN 17.3 billion. While the figures marked an 18 percent drop in volume and a 9 percent decline in turnover compared to last Friday’s session, the number of deals rose sharply by 33 percent, underscoring heightened investor participation. Market capitalization stood firm at NGN 106 trillion.

Out of 132 equities that exchanged hands, 35 posted gains while 36 closed lower. NPF Microfinance Bank topped the gainers’ chart with a 10 percent rise to NGN 5.61 per share. Morison Industries, Union Homes Real Estate Investment, and Deap Capital Management & Trust also recorded strong advances, each climbing close to 10 percent. On the flip side, May & Baker Nigeria led the laggards with a 10 percent slump to NGN 39.15 per share, followed by Neimeth International Pharma, Associated Bus Company, and Computer Warehouse Group. Chams dominated trading volumes with 41.6 million shares, ahead of Access Holdings (34.4m), Guaranty Trust Holding (31.6m), and Zenith Bank (26m).

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI) edged up slightly by 5.38 points to close at 165,517.56. Despite the modest gain, the index reflected a weekly loss of 0.36 percent, though it maintained a four-week rally of 7.8 percent and a year-to-date appreciation of 6.36 percent. Sectoral indices showed mixed outcomes: the NGX Consumer Goods Index rose 0.16 percent, the NGX Premium Index added 0.02 percent, and the NGX Banking Index gained 0.02 percent. Meanwhile, the NGX Top 30 Index slipped 0.02 percent, the NGX Pension Index fell 0.02 percent, and the NGX Industrial Index closed flat.

Analysts say the contrasting trends highlight a cautious but active market mood, with investors balancing profit-taking against selective buying in key sectors.
