Governor Seeks Assembly Approval to Boost Delta’s 2026 Spending

Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has requested the approval of the State House of Assembly for a supplementary budget aimed at adjusting the state’s existing spending framework.

The request was communicated through a formal letter read during plenary by the Speaker of the House, Dennis Guwor, in Asaba. According to the governor, the supplementary appropriation is required to accommodate emerging fiscal pressures arising during the implementation of the state’s current budget.

The governor explained that additional funding has become necessary to address obligations related to pension payments, healthcare financing, debt servicing, and urgent community-based interventions. He noted that these obligations were not fully captured in the original budget framework, making a review unavoidable.

Oborevwori stated that the supplementary proposal is intended to ensure the continuity of governance and sustain the implementation of his administration’s development agenda. He added that lump-sum pension payments were included to ease the hardship faced by pensioners who had served the state diligently.

He further informed lawmakers that increased enrolment under the state’s health insurance scheme has raised equity contribution requirements, contributing to higher expenditure pressures. Rising debt servicing obligations on external loans and increased statutory allocations to local governments were also cited as key drivers of the adjustment.

The governor maintained that the supplementary budget would help realign spending priorities and prevent disruptions in service delivery across the state.
