Lagos Shuts Yakoyo Restaurant After Inspector Clash
The Lagos State Government on Wednesday sealed Yakoyo Restaurant, a popular food outlet located on Sinari Daranijo Street in Victoria Island, after the management allegedly mobilised hoodlums to attack officials of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (KAI) during an enforcement exercise.
The action followed a joint inspection conducted on December 10, 2025 by the Lagos State Wastewater Management Office and KAI to check ongoing environmental violations at the premises, including the alleged discharge of untreated wastewater, fats and oil into the environment. According to the state authorities, the restaurant had earlier been sealed for such infractions but reportedly broke the government seal before the Wednesday operation.
During the follow-up exercise, officials said they were confronted by hoodlums believed to have been unleashed by the restaurant’s management, resulting in injuries to four KAI officers who were on lawful duty. The government described the attack as a deliberate attempt to obstruct enforcement and undermine environmental standards in the state.
Officials from the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources stressed that the government would not tolerate any form of intimidation, assault or obstruction against its officers. They warned that any business or individual found attacking enforcement personnel would face immediate sanctions, including sealing of premises and prosecution of those involved.
The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources confirmed that the restaurant’s supervisor had been arrested during the operation, and that Yakoyo Restaurant would remain sealed pending further directives. He added that additional arrests would be made to identify and apprehend all those responsible for the assault.
The state government reiterated that environmental compliance is mandatory for all businesses and insisted that lawlessness would not be allowed to thrive in Lagos.
