Dangote Group has announced a major expansion of its fertiliser operations in Nigeria and Ethiopia, reinforcing its commitment to regional food security, agricultural productivity, and Africa’s competitiveness in the global fertiliser market.

The landmark initiative includes a $2.5 billion fertiliser plant in Gode, Ethiopia, with a projected annual output of three million metric tons of urea. In Nigeria, the Group is scaling up production capacity from three million to nine million metric tons per year by adding four new trains to its existing facility in Lekki, which currently operates two.

To ensure world-class efficiency and technology adoption, Dangote Group has entered into several international collaborations. Topsoe will provide ammonia technology licensing and process design packages for six ammonia plants — four in Nigeria and two in Ethiopia. Saipem will deliver technology licensing and design packages for urea melt units across all six plants. Thyssenkrupp UFT will supply granulation technology licensing and design packages to produce premium-quality urea granules for both domestic and export markets. Engineers India Limited has been appointed as project management consultant and EPCM consultant for the four Nigerian plants under DFFZE in Lekki.

By boosting urea and ammonia output, the Group aims to reduce Africa’s reliance on imported fertiliser, strengthen local agricultural supply chains, and enhance global competitiveness.

Beyond production, the projects are expected to generate significant employment opportunities, stimulate industrial growth, and provide the technical expertise required to operate large-scale fertiliser facilities.
