Lagos Celebrates 5 Million Blue Line Riders with Fare Slash

The Lagos State Government has announced a 50% reduction in fares on the Blue Line metro rail to mark the system’s second anniversary. The discounted fares will take effect on Thursday, September 4, 2025.

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, in a statement on Wednesday, revealed that the Blue Line has transported more than five million passengers since it began operations two years ago. He described the milestone as a reflection of the efficiency and safety of the rail project, noting that not a single accident has been recorded during this period.

The governor highlighted that trains on the line now operate every ten minutes, completing over 90 trips daily. This, he said, has significantly reduced commuting time for thousands of residents who rely on the service for movement across the city.

“To commemorate two years of safe and efficient operations, I am pleased to announce a 50% reduction in fares on the Blue Line for tomorrow,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

Expansion Plans Underway

The Blue Line is part of the Lagos Rail Mass Transit (LRMT) system, spanning 27 kilometers from Marina to Okokomaiko. Phase 1, a 13-kilometer stretch from Marina to Mile 2, was completed in 2023 and inaugurated for commercial operations in September of that year.

Work is ongoing on Phase 2, which covers a 14-kilometer extension from Mile 2 to Okokomaiko. The project, handled by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), is scheduled for completion in 2026.

As part of the expansion, the Mazamaza Bridge will be demolished and rebuilt after structural assessments showed it could not support rail operations. Two additional bridges—the Satellite Bridge and the LASU Bridge—are also being constructed, each designed with a lifespan of over 75 years to ensure long-term safety and durability.

Phase 2 will add six new stations—Festac, Alakija, Trade Fair, Volkswagen, LASU, and Okokomaiko—while a 400,000-square-meter depot at Okokomaiko will serve as the main hub for rail maintenance and operations.

According to the state government, the Blue Line remains central to Lagos’ broader transportation master plan aimed at providing safe, fast, and affordable mobility for its growing population.
