NCC Advises Nigerians on How to Prevent Excessive Mobile Data Usage

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has responded to growing concerns from mobile users about rapid data depletion by offering a set of practical recommendations aimed at helping consumers manage their data more efficiently.

Although both the NCC and telecom operators have consistently denied allegations of deliberate data siphoning, the Commission acknowledged that many users are unaware of how certain smartphone features can silently consume data. This lack of understanding often leads to frustration and mistrust.

To address this, the NCC released a guide titled “Smart Data Management Tips,” encouraging users to take proactive steps such as monitoring their data usage, connecting to Wi-Fi when available, disabling automatic updates, and restricting background data activity. The Commission also emphasized the importance of downloading content for offline use, turning off location services when not needed, enabling data-saving modes, and taking advantage of data rollover options where available.

Freda Bruce-Bennett, Director of the Consumer Affairs Bureau, stated that the NCC has launched a study into data depletion complaints and is working closely with service providers to enforce fair usage policies. She stressed the need for subscribers to be equipped with the knowledge to monitor and optimize their mobile data plans, whether daily, weekly, or monthly.
