Massive Funding Revamps Over 8,000 Health Centres Across Nigeria

Nigeria’s primary healthcare system has received a significant boost through the disbursement of nearly ₦50 billion to over 8,000 Primary Health Centres (PHCs) across the country since 2023. The funding, facilitated by the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund (BHCPF), has led to a surge in healthcare access, with over 37 million visits to PHCs recorded in the first quarter of 2025 alone.

Health Minister Muhammad Pate revealed that the BHCPF, which draws funding from at least 1% of the Federal Government’s Consolidated Revenue Fund and donor contributions, is designed to expand access to essential health services and strengthen the national health infrastructure. He noted that the fund has played a pivotal role in modernizing PHCs across all local government areas.

Under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, more than ₦20 billion has been allocated to rehabilitate and upgrade 4,362 PHCs across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, with similar progress reported in the southern regions. Pate also announced that Nigeria is on track to surpass the 2024 record of 2.4 million health insurance enrollments later this year.

The Minister emphasized that the transformation is driven by data and a unified strategy to improve healthcare delivery from primary to tertiary levels. He described the BHCPF as a cornerstone for sustainable healthcare financing and a key instrument for grassroots development.
