FG to Build $18.2 Billion Super Grid to End Blackouts

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to build a new “super power grid” aimed at ending nationwide electricity blackouts. The new infrastructure will be funded by an $18.2 billion loan recently approved by the National Assembly.

Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, announced the project during the commissioning of a 63MVA, 132/33kV mobile substation in Ibadan, Oyo State. He explained that the super grid would serve as a backup to the ageing national grid, ensuring power can be rerouted in case of failures.

The mobile substation was developed through the Presidential Power Initiative in collaboration with Siemens Energy and is expected to enhance supply to surrounding communities such as Apete, The Polytechnic Ibadan, Sango, and Bodija.

Adelabu noted that Nigeria currently operates on a single, fragile grid, and the super grid would create a more reliable, fallover system. The Tinubu administration, he said, is committed to delivering the project as a key milestone in national infrastructure renewal.

Meanwhile, planned maintenance on the Omotosho–Ikeja West 330kV power line will cause daily power outages in Lagos from July 28 to August 21, between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., as announced by the Ikeja Electric and Eko Electricity Distribution Company.
