FG Targets Two Million Jobs Through Social Housing Programme

The Federal Government has announced plans to create over two million jobs through the Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme, a bold initiative aimed at tackling Nigeria’s housing deficit and stimulating employment across the country.

Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Dangiwa, made this known during a session with the House of Representatives Committee on Housing and Habitat at the National Assembly in Abuja.

According to him, the programme plans to build 100 housing units in each of the 774 local government areas nationwide, targeting low-income earners, vulnerable populations, the unemployed, and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs). Dangiwa stated that the initiative has the capacity to generate more than two million jobs, estimating 25 workers per job site and 27 jobs per location across 77,400 project sites.

The project will be funded through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund. He added that a bill will soon be introduced to the National Assembly to institutionalise a National Social Housing Fund that will guarantee long-term sustainability.

Dangiwa noted that while awaiting the release of the 2025 budget, the ministry has been implementing several inherited projects using resources from the previous fiscal year and the 2022 supplementary budget.

Many of the Renewed Hope Cities and Estates are nearing completion. Dangiwa revealed that the Karsana project in Abuja, as well as similar projects in Kano and Lagos, are at advanced stages, with commissioning expected soon—though construction of access roads in Abuja might slightly delay the process.

He also disclosed that housing subscriptions had already begun on various sites, and developers had started recovering their investments. A request had been submitted to the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation to prioritise housing in fund disbursement.

Chairman of the House Committee on Housing and Habitat, Abdulmumin Jibrin Kofa, commended the ministry’s efforts and pledged continued legislative support for impactful delivery of the housing programme.
