Benjamin Kalu (1st right) during the commissioning of the newly constructed Arterial Road N5, now named Obafemi Awolowo Way, in Abuja on Friday.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Barr. Ezenwo Nyensom Wike, hailed Julius Berger Nigeria PLC as a “trustworthy partner” during the commissioning of the first phase of Abuja’s N5 Arterial Road on Friday. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, represented by Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Chief George Akume, also thanked the company “for a job well done.”

Minister Wike recounted first meeting Engr. Dr. Peer Lubasch, Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria, in Wiesbaden, Germany, when he led the Rivers State delegation to negotiate the Port Harcourt Ring Road project. Their relationship, Wike said, grew stronger when Lubasch assumed leadership of the Nigerian subsidiary.

“Although the project timeline was one year and three months, I challenged him to deliver it as part of Mr. President’s second‑year anniversary achievements,” Wike said, noting that Julius Berger agreed to begin work on the N5 road even before payment was fully in place—testimony, he added, to the company’s confidence in the current administration’s commitment to contractors.

Chief Akume observed that the new road will significantly ease traffic flow between Dape, Gwarinpa I, Kado, Karsana, Idu, and Mbora, while decongesting Lifecamp junction and surrounding districts.

Key members of the Julius Berger leadership team at the event included Oliver Berger (Manager, Region North and Central), Johnny Houchan (Project Manager), and Engr. Dr. Ismaila Amodu (Project Coordinator).
