Dangote Refinery Begins Fuel Supply Nationwide Amid Tanker Protest Threats

The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has commenced the nationwide distribution of fuel products following threats of a blockade by petroleum tanker drivers protesting new government-imposed fees.

The National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) had earlier announced plans to halt fuel loading from the Dangote Refinery over a new ₦12,500 E-Call-Up levy introduced by the Lagos State Government. The levy, which regulates truck access into the Lekki Free Trade Zone, was criticized by drivers as excessive, with many insisting the amount should not exceed ₦2,500.

In response to the looming crisis, Dangote Refinery launched its own distribution initiative using 4,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered trucks. The company said the move would ensure uninterrupted fuel supply across the country, regardless of industrial action.

The Lagos State Government, however, defended the fee, stating it was aimed at controlling traffic, preserving infrastructure, and boosting security on the busy Lekki-Epe corridor. But with growing tensions between stakeholders, concerns remain over potential disruption in fuel supply, especially in Lagos and surrounding areas.

Dangote’s intervention is expected to mitigate the impact of the blockade and improve product availability nationwide.
