Afreximbank Launches $1B Africa Film Fund

The African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank), through its investment arm—the Fund for Export Development in Africa (FEDA)—has launched a $1 billion initiative aimed at accelerating growth in Africa’s film and creative sectors.

This new Africa Film Fund is part of the Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, designed to address structural challenges such as limited production infrastructure and the scarcity of sustainable financing options for content creators across the continent.

According to the bank, the fund seeks to stimulate the production and global distribution of high-quality African stories, while building a resilient creative economy.

Professor Benedict Oramah, President of Afreximbank, described the initiative as both a financial and cultural mission. “Our goal is to uplift African voices and unlock the creative sector’s capacity to fuel inclusive economic development. This fund provides the means to amplify the continent’s narrative on a global scale,” he said.

The fund will operate using a private equity structure and is set to invest in content production, capacity building, and industry infrastructure. The approach aims to enable long-term industry growth rather than offering short-term funding solutions.

FEDA’s Chief Executive, Marlene Ngoyi, emphasized that the initiative goes beyond supporting film projects. “It’s about laying the foundation for an entire ecosystem—one that nurtures creative talent, drives cultural innovation, and contributes to Africa’s economic future,” she stated.

Acclaimed actor and media entrepreneur Boris Kodjoe praised the launch as a major leap forward for African filmmakers. “This is the opportunity we’ve waited for—to share our stories with authenticity and pride, and to compete on the global stage,” he said.

Oscar-winning actress Viola Davis also lent her support, highlighting the importance of African representation in global media. “Africa’s stories are vibrant, honest, and deeply human. This effort is a gateway for the world to connect with the continent through its own lens,” she said.
