Sony Raises PS5 Prices in Africa and Beyond

Sony has increased the price of several PlayStation 5 models across regions including Africa, Europe, and Asia-Pacific, citing inflation and currency volatility.

In a statement on Monday, the company called the move a “difficult but necessary” response to the current global economic climate. The price changes are already in effect and exclude the U.S. market.

Sony explained that due to persistent inflation and currency fluctuations, it had to adjust pricing in selected markets. While the company did not reveal all affected countries, it confirmed that buyers in the Middle East and Africa would see higher prices for some PS5 versions.

In Europe, the PS5 Digital Edition now sells for €499.99, reflecting over a 10% increase. In the UK, the price has risen to £429.99 (around $566). Australia and New Zealand are also impacted, with increases on both the standard and digital versions.

Sony did not specify new prices in African countries but confirmed that regional adjustments are underway. These mid-cycle price hikes are rare in the gaming industry and highlight broader challenges as tech firms grapple with rising costs and supply chain disruptions.

The PS5 Pro, launched in late 2024, will keep its current pricing. Meanwhile, Sony plans a small price cut for the external Blu-ray disc drive, though no reason was given.

Since its 2020 release, the PS5 has seen strong demand, especially during the pandemic. However, current economic conditions are creating new hurdles for both companies and consumers.
