Senate Calls for Review of Rising Data Costs in Nigeria

The Nigerian Senate has urged the Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy to work closely with telecommunications providers to reassess the recent surge in data prices.

This call follows growing concerns about the steep increase in internet costs, which has imposed a heavy financial burden on Nigerians.

During a plenary session, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong of Cross River State highlighted that telecommunication providers have raised data prices by as much as 200%. This sharp increase has significantly impacted citizens, particularly the youth, many of whom depend on affordable internet access for work and other critical activities. Senator Ekpenyong emphasized that fiber-optic internet services remain out of reach for the average Nigerian, forcing many to rely on mobile providers for connectivity. He warned that the rising costs threaten the livelihood of millions and limit access to essential digital services.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio lent his support to the motion, stating that addressing the issue would benefit young entrepreneurs and enable them to sustain their businesses. He expressed hope that more affordable internet would spur innovation and create economic opportunities for the nation’s youth.

In response, the Senate also recommended that the Ministry of Communications develop a comprehensive policy to make internet services more accessible and affordable. Additionally, they encouraged the establishment of technology hubs across the country to provide free or subsidized internet access for students, entrepreneurs, and innovators. These measures are aimed at fostering a sustainable telecommunications sector and ensuring that all Nigerians can benefit from the digital economy.
