Nigeria Unveils Solar-Powered Electric Vehicle Charging Station in Abuja

The Federal Government has inaugurated Nigeria’s first solar-powered electric vehicle (EV) charging station in Abuja, a major step towards promoting sustainable energy solutions in the country.

The project, spearheaded by the Ministry of Innovation, Science, and Technology in collaboration with the Electric Motor Vehicle Company (EMVC), was officially launched by Minister Uche Nnaji.

Nnaji hailed the initiative as a crucial milestone in Nigeria’s journey toward green energy, aligning with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on reducing reliance on fossil fuels, cutting carbon emissions, and embracing eco-friendly innovations. He called for nationwide expansion of the project to make electric mobility accessible across Nigeria, underscoring its potential to revolutionize transportation.

Reaffirming the ministry’s dedication to advancing technology and attracting both local and international investment, Nnaji emphasized that initiatives like this would drive sustainable employment and bolster the green economy.

Dr. Mustapha Abdullahi, Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), highlighted the station’s design for long-term sustainability. According to Abdullahi, the project supports Nigeria’s climate action policies by leveraging solar power to minimize greenhouse gas emissions.

The facility features state-of-the-art fast-charging technology capable of fully powering an electric vehicle in just 30 minutes. It operates through a dual power system, seamlessly switching between public grid electricity and Solar Photovoltaic (PV) energy. Additionally, the station is equipped with a 20-kilowatt lithium battery and a BVA intelligent inverter to ensure fast charging and easy maintenance.

Abdullahi praised the collaborative effort between the ministry and EMVC, recognizing the project as a pioneering achievement that paves the way for a greener transportation future in Nigeria.
