Police and NAICOM Set Up Committee to Enforce Compulsory Insurance

The National Insurance Commission (NAICOM) and the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) have established a joint committee to enforce compulsory insurance laws across the country.

The committee was officially inaugurated at NAICOM’s Abuja headquarters on Thursday.

Earlier in January, the Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Kayode Egbetokun, confirmed that the Nigeria Police Force would step up its enforcement of third-party motor insurance laws beginning February 1, 2025, following consultations with the Commissioner for Insurance and NAICOM.

This collaboration is aimed at enhancing insurance compliance in Nigeria and follows the announcement by the Inspector-General of Police on the enforcement of motor vehicle insurance starting February 1, 2024.

The committee’s key objectives include creating strategies to enforce compulsory insurance policies, ensuring adherence to the Insurance Act, and promoting collaboration between NAICOM and the NPF. The committee will also focus on providing training and capacity-building for personnel from both agencies.

Their tasks will include identifying and addressing challenges in enforcing compulsory insurance, proposing necessary reforms, developing protocols for joint enforcement operations, and conducting public awareness campaigns on insurance compliance.

This joint effort is an important step in ensuring vehicle owners comply with mandatory insurance laws, which will contribute to safer roads and a more secure environment for all road users.
